FAQ

About ethnicity rankings.

  1. What demographic rankings are available for New Zealand?

Ethnicity, using Stats NZ Census 2023 Level-1 ethnic groups: European, Māori, Asian, Pacific Peoples, and MELAA (Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African). Each leads to a ranking of suburbs by the number of residents identifying with that group, with the figure shown as a share of population.

  2. Why is there no occupation or industry ranking like Australia?

The processed New Zealand Census release used here carries ethnicity at the suburb (SA2) level but not occupation or industry breakdowns, so ethnicity is the demographic dimension available for NZ. The Australian rankings add occupation and industry where ABS coverage allows.

  3. How should I read an ethnicity ranking?

As a concentration screen, not a property verdict. A high count shows where a community is largest, not whether a suburb is affordable, well-serviced, or a good investment. Confirm those on the suburb pages or the rent, schools, and deprivation rankings.
